title. THE LIBERTINE

date. OCTOBER 2019- MAY 2020

A speculative design project based on the play 'The Libertine' by Stephen Jeffreys. Designed for the Nottingham Playhouse Main stage. The play is based on the life of John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester. A poet, playwright and courtier of Charles II during the restoration period.

Design concept: The breaking- down of a set during the performance to mirror the decay of Rochester. Starting in the 1670s, and finishing in the 1970s. Walls fly out slowly and at different times throughout the play, leaving behind the framework. Almost representing a skeleton of the life Rochester left behind. Ending up in the 1970s is a metaphor for the fact that 'the show must go on'.....even without Rochester.
